The Detroit Windshield Technicians’ Association has shared in its official website tips on how to resolve the issue of a chattering windshield. DWTA President Peter Kinley says chattering windshield wipers can be a pain to the ear. “Apart from being annoying, it can even mean that the windshield wiper is not working as it should be, thus affecting the vision of the driver and the over-all safety,” says Peter Kinley, President of the DWTA.

Kinley explains “Usually the cause for a chattering or squeaky windshield are either dirty windshield or filthy wiper blades. To get rid of this problem, it is best to thoroughly clean the windshield, and then give the wiper blades a thorough cleaning as well.”

Men’s website The Art of Manliness though says that sometimes a deep clean of both the windscreen and the windshield wiper blades may not be able to stop the wipers from chattering. In their write up on the common windshield wiper problems, they discussed how to fix a squeaky windshield wiper blade.

“Give your windshield a nice, thorough scrubbing. Give the blades a good cleaning too, for good measure. If that doesn’t fix the chattering, the problem may be a bent wiper arm. To make this diagnosis, bring the wiper up to mid-stroke on the windshield and examine the blade assembly. The blades should be making full contact on the windshield and the blade arms should be parallel to the glass. If the arm is bent, use some pliers to carefully twist it until it is parallel with the glass again. A final reason that a wiper blade might chatter over the glass is because it is frozen. Give it some time to warm up with the defroster and you should be back in business.”

Deep Cleaning

Firestone Care also came up with possible solutions on chattering windshield wipers. In its blog post, it mentioned that deep clean, plus a thorough check up on the windshield wiper’s mechanism could solve the issue.

“Clean your blades with warm, soapy water. This will remove any build-up, hopefully reducing the chattering and improving the wiper’s effectiveness. If the wiper arm is bent the blade might not make full contact with the windshield, causing the chattering. Bring the wiper blade to your windshield and check if the blade is parallel to the glass. If it isn’t, you can use pliers to bend the arm back into proper shape or have a technician take a look.”

Contaminated Windshield

Auto Blog It Still Runs also came up with its own advice on chattering and skipping windshields. In their write-up, they mentioned possible contamination in the windshield such that which come from acid rain. Safe Windshields

“Check the windshield for contamination, if the wipers check out. At times, windshield glass can become contaminated. After cleaning, put your hand inside a plastic bag and run it over the glass. If the texture is pebbly, it is contaminated. Apply clay to the windshield. If the glass is contaminated, you can "clay" it. Usually, claying is to remove a pebbly texture on car paint, but it works on the windshield as well. Buy a clay bar and clay lubricant, available at auto stores. Directions are on the package. Buy new wiper blades if the problem persists.”
